TIPS

Fuel Savings

Reduce speeds and don’t brake hard
Aggressive driving can use as much as a third more fuel than smooth driving. Avoid accelerating or braking too hard and try to keep your steering as smooth as possible

Use the gears sensibly
Fact of the matter is that correct use of gears can make huge savings on your fuel bill of up to 15%! Make sure you change up into a higher gear as soon as its possible and safe to do so.

Plan trips carefully and avoid the rush hour
Cutting down on the time spent in the car is the easiest way to conserve fuel. To reduce driving time, combine all your short trips and errands into a single journey. Plus, if you can travel outside of peak times, you’ll spend less time stuck in traffic and consume less fuel as a result.

Reduce your car weight
You may be surprised, but every extra pound or kilogram matters and affects your fuel efficiency. So keep your boot and back seat clear of unnecessary items that just add weight to your vehicle (e.g. golf clubs).

Keep your tyres at the right pressure
Make sure you check your tyre pressures reguarly (at least once every 2 weeks). An under-inflated tyre can increase fuel consumption by 3%, and it will wear out quicker too. Check your owner’s manual for the correct pressures.

Keep the windows closed
Wind blowing through an open window will slow down your car. To compensate, you may put your foot down harder, using more fuel.

Slow down and Turn off Air Conditioner
Consider shutting off the air conditioner, opening the windows and enjoying the breeze. It may be a warmer, but at lower speeds you’ll save fuel. At higher speeds the A/C may be more efficient than the wind resistance from open windows and sunroof.

Tune and service your engine
A well-tuned engine can improve fuel economy, so change your oil and follow your car manufacturer’s recommendation on servicing. For example, replacing a clogged air filter can improve fuel economy and will help protect your engine.

Turn car off
Idling gets you nowhere but still burns fuel. Turn the engine off when you’re in a queue, or waiting for someone. As a rule if you think you will be stopped for more than 10 seconds, switch off your engine.

Accelerate on right time
Think ahead when approaching hills. If you accelerate, do it before you reach the hill, not while you’re on it.

Use the correct grade of motor oil
The grade of the oil pretty much tells us about the viscosity. If you use the wrong grade, you may increase the friction in your engine. It gets hotter and uses more gas.

Replace air filters
Replace your air filter when you need to, or your mix won’t be right. However don’t replace it every time. Try to find out how often you need a new filter.

Tires Care

Fit the Right Tyres
Ask your car tyre specialist advice for the best tyres to suit your car and driving needs. Ensure that tyres with the correct size, speed rating, load capacity and inflation pressure are fitted to your vehicle to increase your safety from the ground up.

Check Pressure Regularly
Ensure that you check your air pressure at least once a week. For the greatest accuracy, check your tyres when they are cold with a reliable tyre pressure gauge.

Do Not Mix Tyres
It is potentially dangerous to mix tyres of different sizes as they have individual handling characteristics.

Avoid Road Curb
Every time you hit the curb with your tyres, you increase the likelihood of fractures occurring in the sidewall of your tyres. So it makes sense to drive and park carefully to avoid contact with curbs.

Do Not Drive on Bald Tyres
Once tyre tread wears down to around 1.6mm, your tyres may be unsafe.
